Ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, other US delegation meet Dalai Lama in Himachal

Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Michael McCaul, and other members of the congressional delegation arrived at the Dalai Lama‘s residence on Wednesday to meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The delegation visited the Dalai Lama’s residence in Himachal Pradesh’s McLeod Ganj, with the head of the delegation, Michael McCaul, saying President Joe Biden would soon sign a bill that aims to press China to resolve the Tibet dispute.

The Resolve Tibet Act calls on Beijing to resume talks with Tibetan leaders, which have been halted since 2010, to resolve their governance disagreement with China peacefully. The bill aims for the two countries to reach a negotiated settlement regarding Tibet. It also urges China to address the desires of the Tibetan people concerning their historical, cultural, religious, and language identity.

On Tuesday, a group of US representatives, including Nancy Pelosi, arrived at Kangra airport in Dharamshala. It also includes Rep Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Speaker Emerita, Rep Gregory Meeks, Rep Nicole Malliotakis, Rep Jim McGovern, and Rep Ami Bera.

The lawmakers will discuss with the Dalai Lama a U.S. bill that aims to pressure China to resolve the Tibet dispute, which awaits the signature of President Joe Biden, McCaul said.

Beijing, which calls the Dalai Lama a dangerous “splittist” or separatist, said it was seriously concerned about the visit and the bill.

It urged the lawmakers not to make contact with what it calls the “Dalai clique” and Biden not to sign the bill.

The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet. Chinese officials chafe at any interaction he has with officials of other countries.

The Dalai Lama has met U.S. officials, including presidents, during previous visits to the United States, but Biden has not met him since taking office in 2021.

  1. Instead of wasting time, do something that makes Emperor Xi Jinping unpopular.
His nationalist schemes, irrespective of its damage on its own nation, Chinese population loves him a lot, irrespective of his policies failing & falling. He is the undisputed Emperor !! i.e. more Emperors to follow in China after him.

  2. Drama with noise. Had we not seen it happening & repeating in past so many decades (at least since 50 years) ? Outdated techniques.
