Death toll hits over 33 in Tamil Nadu hooch tragedy

According to officials, at least 33 people died and more than 60 people have been hospitalized after reportedly consuming illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu‘s Kallakurichi district.

The officials have expressed concern that the death toll may go up.

Police arrested a bootlegger named K Govindaraj alias Kannukutti, 49, on charges of selling illicit arrack and seized more than 200 litres of the brew. Samples tested at a forensic laboratory in Villupuram were found to have the poisonous methanol.

Police said dozens of people from Kallakurichi town and neighbouring areas had consumed illicit arrack sold by bootleggers at Karunapuram on Tuesday night.

Kallakurichi District Collector M S Prasanth visited those undergoing treatment in Government Medical College Hospital in the district.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi also expressed his condolences for the lives lost and wished for the swift recovery of those affected.

“Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin the society will be suppressed with an iron fist,” he added. TN Governor R N Ravi condoled the deaths and wished for a speedy recovery of the victims.

“I was very shocked to know that many lives were lost in Kallakurichi due to consumption of counterfeit liquor. Many others are fighting for their lives in critical condition. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and a speedy recovery to those admitted to the hospitals,” a post shared by Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan mentioned.

“From time to time, news emerges from different parts of our state about deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor. They reflect continuing shortcomings in curbing illicit alcohol production and consumption. This is a matter of serious concern,” the post further stated.

Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed shock over the deaths and said that action had been taken against officials who failed to prevent it.

“I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it,” Stalin said in a post on X.

  1. so you are saying that these rascals will die consuming illicit liquor and die b’cause they get state compension. Then we have to doubt farmer’s suicides. in such cases the middle men is benefitted. when we will change

  2. DMK liquor is elixir to death !! NONE will learn any lesson. More would drink it as a poison & to commit suicides. Depending family will get state sponsored ex-gratia. Have no sympathy for this drunker.
    Think it should bring big relieve to their dependent families once for all.
