CBI expands inquiry into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has expanded its inquiry into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, placing six additional doctors under scrutiny. This development follows the arrest of the college’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, and his associate Ashish Pandey, who are currently in judicial custody.

Sources indicate that the newly implicated doctors are being investigated for their potential involvement in a multi-crore scam, which includes manipulation of the hospital’s tendering process. Allegations suggest that contracts were awarded to unqualified contractors in exchange for hefty commissions, while infrastructure jobs were illegally outsourced to private agencies, bypassing state regulations.

Further serious charges include the smuggling of biomedical waste and the illegal sale of organs from unidentified bodies in the hospital morgue.

The CBI has already interrogated some of these six doctors as suspects and has secured crucial documents linking them to the financial irregularities. Investigators are also considering informing the West Bengal government about their findings to facilitate the removal of these doctors from their positions during the investigation.

In addition to the financial irregularities, Sandip Ghosh is being probed for his alleged involvement in the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the facility in August.

Alongside the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is conducting a parallel investigation into the financial irregularities, having initiated its inquiry after filing an enforcement case information report (ECIR). The CBI’s investigation is both court-directed and monitored, ensuring oversight of the proceedings.
