Supreme Court allows cancellation of NEET results for 1563 candidates

The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the decision to give grace marks to 1,563 candidates of NEET-UG 2024 by the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been cancelled and the students will be given the option to apply for a retest on June 23.

The apex court was hearing petitions related to the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG, 2024 examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other courses.

The government told the court that a committee has been constituted to review the results of over 1,563 candidates who were awarded ‘grace marks’ to compensate for the loss of time suffered while appearing for NEET-UG.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of a petition regarding the alleged irregularities in the NEET UG exam and allowed the Centre to cancel the result of 1,563 candidates who were awarded grace marks as compensation for lost time.

The top court also accepted the Centre’s proposal to hold a re-examination for them. Candidates will be informed of their scores minus the grace marks. If they don’t take a re-test, the new marks will be taken.

The court allowed the NTA to conduct the re-test, most likely on June 23, and cancel the scorecards of those 1563 candidates who opted to appear. Affected candidates who do not wish to sit for the re-examination, their original scores, without the grace marks, will be considered, it noted.

“The Committee has taken a decision to cancel the scorecards of 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who were given grace marks and these students will be given the option to take a re-test, SC informed. Exams will be conducted on June 23 and results will be declared before June 30,” (National Testing Agency) NTA told the apex court.

Counselling for admission in MBBS, BDS, and other courses will start on July 6, NTA said.

Previously, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding the petitions for the cancellation and re-examination of the NEET-UG 2024, which were prompted by allegations of a paper leak and irregularities in the allocation of grace marks.
