Sanatana Dharma remarks row: Udhayanidhi Stalin’s court appearance postponed to August 8

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was granted conditional bail with a surety of Rs .1 lakh by the Special Court of Magistrate for trial of cases against present and former MPs/MLAs.

Stalin appeared before the Special Court of Magistrates on Tuesday morning.

The court also granted an exemption to Udhayanidhi Stalin from appearing in further proceedings in the case.

As the case is also being looked into by the Supreme Court, the Special Court adjourned the matter to August 8.

The court has taken cognizance of offences under IPC Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation, with intent to cause riot) 298 (uttering words, etc with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings), and 500 (defamation).

The court had ordered Udhayanidhi Stalin to appear before it based on a complaint lodged by social activist V Paramesha in connection with derogatory remarks on Sanatana Dharma. The complainant claimed that the remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin defamed him, his religion, and people belonging to the Hindu faith.

What did Udhayanidhi Stalin say?

Udhayanidhi Stalin said that Sanatana Dharma was against social justice and equality and should be ‘eradicated’.

Stalin compared Sanatana Dharma with diseases like dengue and malaria.

Stalin said, “Sanatana is like malaria and dengue and so it must be eradicated and not opposed.”

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks came at a writers’ conference in Chennai where he said that the idea is inherently regressive, dividing people on the basis of caste and gender, and is fundamentally opposed to equality and social justice. The statement stirred controversy at the national level.

  1. Whatever the man said is on the records, why doe the court not conclude the trail in one day. The utterances are a clear provocation to violence, are we going to wait for violence to take place ?
