Tamil Nadu weather dept predicts heavy rain till Oct 15

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued an orange alert for 11 districts in Tamil Nadu from October 12 to 15, warning residents of impending heavy rainfall. The affected districts include Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Myladuthurai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi.

According to the RMC, a low-pressure area developing between Lakshadweep and the adjoining Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a depression. This weather system is likely to bring heavy rainfall to several districts, including Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and the ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchi, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Theni, and Dindigul.

In addition to heavy rainfall, the RMC has forecasted light to moderate rain with thundershowers in other regions from October 12 to 15. Squally weather is anticipated, with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 km per hour, potentially reaching up to 55 km per hour in some areas.

Fishermen in southern Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Camorin area and the Gulf of Mannar, have been advised not to venture into the sea until next week due to adverse conditions.

While the Northeast monsoon typically begins around October 20, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that it can set in nine days before or after this date. However, the weather department has cautioned that southern districts may experience a rainfall deficit compared to northern regions, although the central areas of the state are expected to receive ample rain.

The IMD also predicts above-normal rainfall for the southern peninsular region, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, during the Northeast monsoon. Enhanced rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu during the last two weeks of October, with the state typically receiving an average of 44 cm of rain during the monsoon season from October to December.

Additionally, the IMD noted the potential influence of the La Niña weather phenomenon, which could result in normal or surplus rainfall in the state. Changing weather dynamics and global warming are also impacting rainfall patterns during both the Southwest and Northeast monsoons.

In preparation for the monsoon, the Tamil Nadu government is coordinating with disaster management authorities and district administrations to address potential flooding and inundation issues. Local authorities have been instructed to clean stormwater drains and carry out essential road repairs to prevent water stagnation and clogging.
