All eyes are on Modi’s new Cabinet

As the swearing-in date of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not yet fixed (expected to be on June 9), the buzz in Delhi is who all from the current Cabinet will be retained in the new Cabinet. The talk of the town (which is so wild) is Modi may even have to leave his trusted man Home Minister Amit Shah or at least change his Ministry as he may be vetoed by powerful allies Nitish Kumar’s JDU and Chandra Babu Naidu’s TDP.

Will Nitish and Naidu forget what Amit Shah said about them in the bitterness days? Will Modi insist that Amit Shah continue in the Home Ministry? Will Amit Shah cut a deal with Nitish and Naidu by assuring that this time will be polite to retain the Home Ministry? In politics anything is possible.

Another name in the firing range is Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Her estranged husband Parakala Prabhakar, a wild critic of Modi is very close to Chandra Babu Naidu. He was earlier Advisor with Cabinet Rank when Naidu was Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Nirmala first became Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh with the support of Naidu and later shifted to Karnataka. Many chief ministers had problems with Finance Minister Nirmala and the BJP depending on allies may adjust to the new political situation.

Both Naidu and Nitish will extract special packages to their states and they will insist on a friendly person in Finance Ministry. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and Piyush Goyal, having friends across all kinds of political spectrums will get key portfolios and are very sure to be powerful and will emerge as a bridge with all allies. Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who won with more than eight lakh votes to Lok Sabha will also emerge as powerful. Will Modi change his style of working and go for creating a good team from the BJP side by seeing the new situation? Will BJP MP Purandeswari get the big role as she is the sister-in-law of TDP’s Chandra Babu Naidu?

Modi’s blue-eyed boy Ashwini Vaishnaw may be out from Railways as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who was once Railway Minister and always has his preferences. Will non-politician kind Hardeep Singh Puri, retired Indian Foreign Service Officer be retained is another question. Even the BJP with 240 MPs still not sure what all key Ministries needed for the powerful allies led by Nitish Kumar and Chandra Babu Naidu. It is widely believed that Chandra Babu Naidu will insist on the post of Lok Sabha Speaker, a crucial post to counter BJP’s one-upmanship.

It is widely believed that Nitish Kumar will dictate who will be the Ministers of the BJP, especially won from Bihar. Even after getting their pound of flesh, it is very sure that the alliance partners will veto their non-preferred persons from the BJP side. Can Prime Minister Narendra Modi ably handle all demands of the powerful allies as his party BJP is short of the majority mark?
