The maiden visit of the Army Chief to one of the forward locations in the frontier district of Poonch signals the top priority is being given to the ongoing anti-terrorist operations aimed at flushing out foreign terrorists hiding in the area and striking at regular intervals to inflict maximum damage to the Indian forces.

Around 35 Army personnel have made a supreme sacrifice in the line of duty between October 2021 and till date in a series of attacks on army convoys and ambushes in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

Before shifting base from Udhampur-based Northern Command headquarters General Upendra Dwivedi was well versed with the modus operandi of these foreign terrorists and he took stock of the ground situation every time the army vehicle was targeted in the areas south of Pir Panjal in recent months.

As head of the Northern Command, he also devised a counter strategy to flush out the foreign terrorists. The additional troops were rushed to the vulnerable areas to plug the infiltration routes and prevent a repeat of terror attacks. The field commanders were also directed to focus on gathering precise human intelligence to unearth the sleeper cells of the Pakistan-based terrorist handlers.

The Army officers were also directed to work in tandem with the local police authorities to maintain a tight vigil on the movement of suspected personnel in the border areas and prone to sheltering these foreign terrorists in exchange for money. It has been revealed by the investigators that Pakistan-based terrorist handlers are relying on a fresh network of overground workers to provide logistics support to the foreign terrorists and help them execute the terror plots by accurately conducting recce of the general area and presence of troops deployed in the vicinity of the attack site.
