Row over Hindu seer’s remarks in Amravati; mob hurls stones

At least 21 police personnel were injured and around 10 police vehicles were damaged during a protest in Amravati, Maharashtra, where an agitated mob demanded the registration of a case against Ghaziabad-based Hindu seer Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj for his remarks about Prophet Mohammed.

The incident occurred outside the Nagpuri Gate police station on Friday evening.

In response to the unrest, Amravati Police have implemented tight security measures across the town, one of the largest in the Vidarbha region. Following the protests, authorities registered a case against approximately 1,200 individuals, identifying 26 of them.

Amravati Police Commissioner Navin Chandra Reddy reported that a large crowd, comprising members of various organizations, gathered around 8:15 PM to demand action against Narsinghanand. Police had informed the demonstrators that an FIR had already been registered regarding the matter. However, after a video of the Hindu seer’s remarks circulated online, the crowd reassembled and turned violent.

Reddy stated, “While police were attempting to engage with the crowd, they suddenly began throwing stones at our personnel.” In response, police issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning the assembly of five or more people in the Nagpuri Gate area. The Commissioner warned that those who took the law into their own hands would face severe consequences.

All police stations in Amravati have been placed on high alert, and additional forces have been deployed to maintain order. As of now, reports indicate that the situation is under control, though police remain vigilant in monitoring developments.
