No consensus on the speaker, I.N.D.I.A bloc’s K Suresh fielded against Om Birla for post
After days of uncertainty over the Lok Sabha Speaker‘s post, the BJP-led NDA has nominated Om Birla for the post again.
Meanwhile, the Congress-led I.N.D.I.A bloc on Tuesday nominated Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-time MP from Kerala, for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.
This has led to an election for the top parliamentary post for the first time since 1946. A Lok Sabha Speaker is elected by a simple majority of MPs voting and all speakers until now had been elected with consensus.
The Opposition had said that they would back the NDA’s choice of speaker in exchange for the deputy speaker’s post.
According to sources, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has made it clear to senior BJP leader and Union Minister Rajnath Singh that the Deputy Speaker should be from the Opposition benches.
Earlier today, Om Birla held talks with PM Modi ahead of day 2 of the Parliament.
Earlier, in 2014 and 2019, the BJP nominated Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla to the post, unopposed because of the majority seats.
